Chrome extension

The Taskgert extension keeps what is being worked on at hand while you browse. Its icon counts the tasks in an active column across your projects; its popup lists them by project, and a click opens the task. A notification tells you when someone starts a task (it enters an active column) or finishes one. Your own changes never notify you.

Install

The extension is not in the Chrome Web Store: it is installed from its package.

  1. Download taskgert-chrome-extension.zip and unzip it into a folder you keep (Chrome loads it from there).
  2. Open chrome://extensions and turn on Developer mode (top right).
  3. Choose Load unpacked and select the unzipped folder.
  4. Pin Taskgert to the toolbar (the puzzle icon).

Chrome may warn that developer-mode extensions are on: that is the price of not going through the Web Store. The extension keeps the same ID (ialdginnnpmimhffgmdnjoejgijiecil) however it is installed, so updating is replacing the folder and pressing Reload in chrome://extensions.

  1. Click the icon, then Link account (or open the extension's Options).
  2. Keep taskgert.com and press Continue, then Sign in with id.jg2dev.net.
  3. Sign in on Pocket ID, in the window Chrome opens. The settings then say who is linked.

The extension never sees your password: you sign in on the provider's own page, exactly as on the web, and the extension receives a Taskgert session of its own. That session is renewed every few minutes and lasts while it is used; Unlink account ends it on the server too.

Another Taskgert server can be chosen with Another server (HTTPS only): Chrome then asks for access to that server and to its sign-in provider.

Projects and notifications

  • Projects: the settings list your projects; untick one to leave it out of the popup, the count and the notifications.
  • Notifications: started when a task enters an active column (neither the first column nor a done one), done when it reaches a done column. A click opens the task. Chrome's own notification settings can silence them.

What the extension can reach

PermissionWhy
api.taskgert.comYour projects and tasks, and the realtime connection
id.jg2dev.netSigning in with Pocket ID
identityThe sign-in window
storageThe session and your settings, on this computer only (never synced)
notificationsTelling you when a task starts or is done
alarmsChecking again every minute, should the connection drop
Other servers (asked for)Only if you choose another server, and only that server and its sign-in provider

It loads no code from the network and sends nothing anywhere but your Taskgert.

Troubleshooting

  • "Sign-in refused" or a provider error page. The provider must accept the extension's address as a redirect: https://ialdginnnpmimhffgmdnjoejgijiecil.chromiumapp.org/ (see the deployment guide).
  • The count does not move. The footer of the popup says Live when the realtime connection is up. Otherwise the extension checks again every minute; Refresh reads at once.
  • "The session ended. Link your account again." The session was ended (unlinked, signed out everywhere, or unused for 30 days): link the account again.
